This is about where I left you last month. We had only just begun.
We worked on it just about every day. This project took lots of time. Maybe all those trips to Lowe's and Home Depot cut into the progress.
As you can see we were working with an elevated crushed rock base. The pavers were removed.
You may recall, these windows were put in last summer after the fireplace and chimney were removed. We have since moved the grill into this space.
We have a building permit for our project. Allan reviewed information related to deck and railing building requirements. And then there were my requirements. Or, as he says, my frequent adjustments to the design.
He very graciously agreed to build up the existing flowerbed to the height of the deck. Then he also agreed to all the additional railing to tie it all together. This is the project that just kept growing and growing.
He left a space to build a set of stairs down to the back. For two years we have been using this step ladder.
He built what we thought were a fine set of steps. And then he started reading the regulations again. Oops! You are not allowed to build steps that end with a high step and the likelihood of tumbling down the rest of the slope!
We gave it lots of thought. Well, Allan did I assure you. Went back to Lowe's and bought some more lumber, chairs, table and umbrella.
We bought soil, plants, and mulch for this garden and mulch for the front garden.
We decided to make use of the pavers that we had saved and concocted this array of steps to get us down to the back yard.
We are thrilled with the end result and look forward to many summers to come spend in the fresh Maine air and sunshine.
On June 24 we spent a most delightful evening with Abby and her preschool friends at their annual recital. They played ukuleles and later pan drums.
We didn't get the motorcycles out until the conclusion of the deck project. I am pleased to say that on June 30, the day after completion we went for a nice ride down to Bucksport, across the bridge and up the east side of the Penobscot. Looking forward to some more rides before this summer slips away under the weight of house projects.
Next week we will move our operation inside...
Toward the end of the month we will head to Labrador and Newfoundland with our Mildhog Traveling Buddies. 4 couples, 1 new Toyota pickup, one 15 passenger van, 3 ferry rides, 17 days on the road and more than 3,000 miles to travel... Could be some more frequent blog posts coming your way.
